Who We Are

Lakeland Andover School provides a compassionate, comprehensive learning environment for 6th -12th grade students. Each student has access to a curriculum and therapies enabling them to realize their full potential.

Our multi-disciplinary approach as a nonprofit, emotional and behavioral therapeutic private school, facilitates the highest levels of success in students diagnosed with many different classifications including, but not limited to ADHD, ODD, PDD, BD, LD, OHI, Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or Asperger’s Syndrome.

LAS students, through sustained reinforcement, learn to identify and build confidence within their strengths. They are encouraged to recognize where their skills may need improvement and endeavored to apply patient effort to advance that skill whether social or practical.

Emphasis is placed on the academic growth and life skills of each student. At every grade level, students are highly engaged in NJ state required academics to meet the individual needs of each student.

LAS also offers students a comprehensive Vocational Platform and affords students many options to explore, including:

  • Metal Shop
  • Welding
  • Small Engine Repair
  • Woodworking
  • Carpentry
  • Culinary Arts
  • Computer Graphics
  • Fine Arts
  • Video Production
  • Music
  • Music Production

Mission Statement:

Lakeland Andover School respects that each student is an individual with unique talents and abilities who can benefit from and enjoy a stimulating educational program designed specifically to meet his or her needs.  Therefore, the school strives to provide quality individualized education plans to students in a caring, creative environment, while facilitating the social, emotional, physical, behavioral, and intellectual development of each student.

Beliefs Statement:

The Lakeland-Andover School believes that:

  • Every student is a valued member of the school community with unique strengths and challenges.
  • Each student's educational program should be individualized to meet his or her needs.
  • School should encourage the development of students intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, and morally.
  • Students should be encouraged to be active participants in the learning process.
  • Students are responsible for their behavior and should be held accountable for their actions.
  • All students and staff members deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
  • School should provide a safe, supportive, nurturing learning environment, free from bullying and harassment.
  • Cultural diversity is valued and celebrated.
  • Students benefit from active involvement of parents/guardians in their child's learning.

Our Students:

Our program is for students in 6th -12th grades, classified with emotional, behavioral, and/or learning challenges.  Some students come to us directly from their public school, on grade level, looking for college preparation courses.  Others have a history of challenges at other schools, may have been diagnosed with a learning disability, and are looking to develop strategies to succeed with their educational and behavioral challenges.

Some families pay privately to have their son/daughter attend our school. This happens in cases where families feel their child would benefit from our program but their school district believes the program offered in district is sufficient to meet the student's needs and is not obligated to send the student out of district.

Program Description

On average we enroll 35-40 students in our program and class sizes vary from 4-12 students.  Classes are staffed with a certified teacher and an instructional aide.  Our low student-to-staff ratio allows us to individualize each student's program to meet his/her needs.  Programs vary from remedial work and daily living skills, to a focus on college preparation.
